Half-ton Recording workshops: get in touch to register your interest

We started our recording and mixing workshops as way of giving a small group of participants a meaningful taste of what it’s like producing music in a professional recording studio. We quickly realised it was not only a fun and rewarding thing for us, in terms of passing on our skills, but also a great way of meeting and connecting with like minded people in our area. The workshops are run by half-ton engineers Neil ‘Bugs’ Rogers and Matty Moon and are relaxed but structured events that pack in as much real world content as possible.

The workshops are open to anyone, but primarily aimed at people early on in their journey learning about recording and producing music. Our workshops are a fun and creative way to turbo charge your understanding of the craft of recording and mixing in a personalised way that is hard to achieve from sifting through the sea of conflicting advice online.

“I would highly recommend the course to beginners, enthusiasts and those with more experience. The studio has a friendly and encouraging atmosphere which meant everyone learnt a lot from the fantastic engineers and nobody was left behind. We also managed to fit in a huge amount of work and lots of laughs too.” (Naomi Randle, 2022)

Two-day recording workshop

.

On our two day recording workshops we typically welcome a musician or band into the studio and explain all the thought processes that go into getting a great recording and managing the general prouduction process. We’ll talk about microphones a lot but also how to adapt the process to different rooms and environments and how to interact with artists in a creative but professional way. Our aim over the two days is to get across some basic technical knowledge in an accessible way but primarily encourage you to think creatively and focus on the important aspects of producing music. As we typically work with groups of around 5 people we try our best to tailor each workshop to the people we have on a paticular course and make it as personal as we can.

“All the subjects covered in the workshop really exceeded my expectations. Simple details really do make a big difference in the recording!” (Fernando, 2022)

The cost of our two-day recording workshop is £200 (we also offer a £150 concessionary price for students/lower incomes)

One-Day Mixing Workshops

Spring dates coming soon…

On our one day mixing workshops we take a small group of participants through the process or creating a professional sounding mix that is ready for the outside world. We’ll cover all the main mixing tools such as EQ and compression but also demonstrate the process and mindset needed to build creative and impactful mixes for any genre. We typically mix a track from scratch during the day and try to tailor the style and genre to the participants we know are attending.

The cost of our one day mixing workshop is £100 (£75 students/lower incomes)
