Mixing and mastering

Mixing

Much of our work these days involves mixing material that people have recorded at home or at other studios. As well as bringing our experienced ears and expertise to a project, it can often be as much about bringing a fresh perspective to a track that may have been worked on for a long time. We have a great mixing set-up at the studio with excellent monitoring and acoustics and we use all the very latest software tools combined with some of our more characterful hardware equipment such as valve compressors, tape echos or spring reverbs. We have a few different options for mixing; depending on how you like to work and what your budget is and often it’s a good idea to work on one song together first - to see if it’s a good fit for both sides. Ultimatley, working on music - especially mixing - is all about taste. Get in touch if you’d like to know more.

Mastering

Mastering is the very final stage in the music production process that takes a finished stereo mix and prepares it for life in the outside world. As well being the last chance to elevate the sound of project, it is also helpful to think of mastering as the ‘quality control’ stage in the process and a good mastering engineer will flag up any issues with a recording or mix that might be holding the finished product back. We’ve been there many, many times as both artists and recording engineers and we know how hard it can be to finish and ‘let go’ of a project you’ve put your heart and soul into over a long period of time. Having a good mastering engineer to guide you through those final stages can really make a huge difference to the finished result. Here at half-ton we can provide affordable mastering services that can help your project stand out from the crowd whether it’s on streaming services, CD or vinyl.
